On the one hand, Puccini was always very interested in collaborating with librettists on the other hand, he always knew how to assert his will. In the end Puccini won 2-0 against his colleague, first because he wrote the more successful work and second because he had staged it a year earlier. Soon afterwards, one could read in the newspapers about the rivalry between the two composers, which was also the rivalry of the two competing publishers Ricordi and Sonzogno.
